Unusual Summer Camps for Kids
Unusual Summer Camps for Kids

After reading about the Hunger Games Camp in Florida, I checked out some other “unusual” summer camps for kids.

HUNGER GAMES CAMP

“I will probably kill you first,” Julianna Pettey 12, told her new friend Rylee Miller, also 12. They’re both at the Hunger Games Camp in Largo, Fla.
The camp’s director, Jared D’Alessio, wanted a nonviolent, bloodless version of the wildly popular book and movie series in which teens murder each other in a tournament to advance.
At the real-life camp, kids compete in a variety of athletic and intellectual challenges, but the kiddos seem unwilling to compromise on the death thing. Frances Pool-Crane, the youngest camper at 10 years old, decorated a poster for the Games with “LOSING MEANS CERTAIN DEATH.”

WIZARDS & WARRIORS CAMP

Location: Day camp is in Burlington, MA; sleepaway camp is in Westford, MA

This is a myth-inspired camp, run by Guard Up! Family Swordsmanship, kids invent their own characters, which they role-play in an ongoing, interactive story.

CIRCUS ARTS CAMP

Location: Hartsdale, NY

Juggling, clowning, unicycling, wire-walking, stilt-walking, and acrobatics. Every two-week session ends with a show where campers reveal their brand-new circus skills.

PLANTATION CAMP

Location: Sonoma County, CA

Here kids get to live — and work — on an operational 500-acre sustainable farm. All campers live a green lifestyle

Recently the pope called a sick man to invite him to the Vatican. The sick man thought it was a prank and hung up. This is a “dramatic reenactment” of the phone call, as only the Morning Crew could do.
