OS ANGELES (AP) — Earlier today Southern Cal senior cornerback Josh Shaw was being hailed as a hero, but not for something done on the football field. Just hours later, Shaw’s story may be unraveling into a not-so-heroic tale.

Shaw claimed he injured both ankles on Saturday after leaping from a second-story balcony to save his 7-year-old nephew from drowning. USC released the story in a press release that quoted Trojans head coach Steve Sarkisian as saying Shaw was a hero for “putting his personal safety aside.”

Shaw told USC that he instinctively jumped from the balcony onto the concrete below and crawled to the pool, pulling his young nephew Carter to safety. However, USC has now stated that it is investigating Shaw’s claims after receiving new information that could contradict his story.

During a press conference on Tuesday, Sarkisian said the university had “gotten a few phone calls” disputing Shaw’s account of his injuries, and said USC is working to further vet the story.
