pet costumes

October 29th, 2009 by alisha-portland

so here we are just days away from Halloween and it begs the question, do you really have to dress your poor animals in costumes, big, bulky, uncomfortable costumes! its just not right. there are dogs that will try to chew them up and swallow bits of fabric that will make them choke. and then there are cats, don’t know if you know this but a cats balance is in his middle and if you place anything around a cats middle it will not be able to even walk, he will just fall over. its totally mean. but hey if you like to dress up your pets and make them miserable, more power to ya!

and just for fun here a few of these little guys who look thrilled their owner dressed them up!costumes41 costumes6costumes22costumes12costumes51costumes32

cold and flu season

October 13th, 2009 by alisha-portland

keene-pumpkin-festwell it hasn’t even been a month since fall started and there is so much that i love about this time of year. i love the fact that every rest. and coffee shop, has pumpkin flavored stuff on the menu. the leaves are changing colors and it’s beautiful to drive around anywhere in New England, even the most boring drives are so much more pleasant. and i love that there is so much to do. we just go and go and go, it’s like we all come alive for the fall there is no shortage of things to do either. the fairs, the craft shows, apple picking, pumpkin patches, haunted hayrides love it!

cold-seasonnow on to all the things i HATE about this time of year. ok so it’s not even a lot of things it’s just that it’s the one time of year as soon as the temp. drops i get sick. it’s like my body says “oh it’s october, immune system shut down!” and it does! could you imagine if i worked with kids! but i have the best husband in the world, who not only went to the store to get nyquil and cough syrup, but he made a giant vat of homemade chicken soup! just like nana makes. and it is sooo good

chicken-soup3 nothing like hot chicken soup and ritz crackers!!!!!! a little ginger brandy and ginger ale helps the throat to (wink) it really does!  so it’s home sequestered to the couch for one more day and i think i will be good to rock and roll.

david letterman scandal

October 2nd, 2009 by alisha-portland

this was the best kept tight lipped secret in Hollywood i think. no one knew David Letterman was involved in an extortion scandal over the last few weeks. the DA set up a sting, got a fake check for 2 mill, which was what the guy asked for, and then the idiot showed up to pick up the check… like it was going to be that easy… “uh i want 2 million dollars becasue i have dirt on you” and it was go easy dave said “ok here ya go” done deal. that guys was so dumb. so last night on his show Dave admitted to the lacivious acts and to me it was 5-10 minutes of awkward laughter and uncomfortable moments… yeah what the guy did was wrong BUT  what about what David Letterman did? that was totally wrong too! i’m just saying. if you want to watch how it all went down on The Late Show with David Letterman see below…

this weekend didn’t turn out ANYTHING like i wanted it to!

September 22nd, 2009 by alisha-portland

ok so as you know i was going to spend the entire weekend ALONE, no husband, no work, nothing! i even went to the store to stock up on munchies and wine. i grabbed a chick flick and a great book. Sounds good so far right?

apparently the fates had other plans. so in between grocery shopping and getting home I get a phone call from my uncle… the uncle that was taking my hubby away for the weekend. well, he was calling to let me know he had an extra ticket to the race and wanted to know if i wanted to join them?!?!

now what’s a girl to do? lifetime, chocolate, and wine alllllll alone or a weekend of fun with the family.

i caved! and ended up having the best weekend ever!

dad-and-lish1

This is my dad and me after making out of the corn maze alive!

hunny-bunny11Charles (husband) and I drove down to NH on Saturday and went apple picking with the family and had a great time getting lost in a corn maze. then we headed up to Laconia to stay at my grandparents cottage so we would only be 10 minutes away from LOUDON! yeah that’s right i said it, i was at the NASCAR race on Sunday!

and i have to say it was AWESOME!!! i never knew how much fun it would be to sit there and watch cars go around in circles. i picked my fav before it began (16 greg biffle) and although he was never a front runner he did come in 9th. but the cut throating for 1st place was unreal! i was on the edge of my seat, with my headphones on listening to the play by play.

and i have to say i never realized how much fun it was! so although we got home way to late and i didnt get much sleep before work on Monday i have to say it was totally worth it.

so all in all i didn’t do anything i was going to this weekend, the bubble bath the wine the candles… and the quiet! on the contrary it was loud a house full of people and a standup shower, and no wine (plenty of beer though) but i had an amazing time and would change a minute of how i spent the weekend. IT WAS ONE TO REMEMBER!

aahhhhh the sound of silence

woman_reading_playso this weekend i have a fantastic weekend planned, what’s in store you might ask… well i am shipping the hubby off to the NASCAR race this weekend. he and my uncle are going to the race so i have a nice quiet few days ahead of me.  ladies, anyone who lives with other people, but for some reason us women relish the peace and quite a bit more than others. i am going to drink wine and READ, something i don’t often get time to do because Charles doesn’t read often. and it’s September Secrets month on lifetime so they are playing all those cheesy chick, made for TV movies all weekend. so when i am not reading i will have a box of tissues and my man hateing emotions flowing because i don’t get to indulge in lifetime when he is home either. what a great weekend i have ahead of me. i can’t wait! jealous?!? i thought so lol!

kanye west is the biggest jack@*% is music history

September 14th, 2009 by alisha-portland

props to taylor swift as she picked up her first “moon man” statue for “female artist of the year” at the MTV video music awards last night… however her speech was cut short from the dog we call Kanye West. who jumped out of his seat and did this to sweet, kind, little taylor…

poor beyonce looks mortified as she sat in the audience. then beyonce proves what a classy lady she is when she shares her moment on stage with taylor. because it was the right thing to do... she called taylor swift back on stage to let her get her acceptance speech in because in the words of the ever classy beyonce "i was 17 years old when i won my first award with destiny's child, i want taylor to come back up here" and she did and was able to her acceptance speech standing beside beyonce... fyi Kanye West was BOOTED OUT OF THE MTV VMA, ESCORTED BY SECURITY! karma is a beast this is gonna come back and bite him in the behind!

useless fact of the day

August 13th, 2009 by alisha-portland

in the 1500’s here is something you may not know. England is old and small and the local folks started running out of places to bury people. So they began digging up coffins, and would take the bones to a “bonehouse” and reuse the grave. the problem was when reopening these coffins, 1 out of every 25 coffins had scratch marks on the inside and they realized they had been burying people alive. So they would tie a string on the wrist of the corpse that led thru the coffin and up through the ground and tie it to a bell. Someone would have to sit out in the graveyard all night (hence the phrase “GRAVEYARD SHIFT”) to listen for the bell: thus someone could be “SAVED BY THE BELL” or they were called a “DEAD RINGER”

and now you can go impress all your friends with your new found “useless knowledge”!

help is on the way

August 5th, 2009 by alisha-portland

look ladies we could all use a little help in the PMS department… these made sense to me, so i thought i would pass them along and hopefully they will help ease that miserable week for you too! they don’t call it the curse for nothing!

Five Tips for Taming PMS
Here’s a statement I don’t think too many women will disagree with: Premenstrual syndrome, or PMS, is a little slice of hell on earth. In the five to seven days before their period, up to 75 percent of women experience at least one unpleasant symptom in the constellation that PMS can cause — from the stereotypical cramps and moodiness to insomnia, fatigue, and nausea. One in 20 women experience premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD), a serious and often disabling condition that can cause persistent depression, marked anger or irritability, and severe aches and pains.

The good news is that there are ways to tame PMS naturally. Try these five tips:

Exercise! You may not want to, but get in your workout anyway. The endorphin rush will help relieve cramps and raise your levels of serotonin, a mood-lifting neurotransmitter.

Get some R&R. Adequate sleep and less stress will put you in a better hormonal position to handle the physiological imbalance that PMS brings.

Cut out most alcohol, caffeine, and salt. Alcohol can exacerbate feelings of depression, so steer clear. Reducing caffeine may minimize breast tenderness and irritability, and cutting salt can reduce bloat.

Minimize simple sugars. Ideally, you’re doing this all the time, but it’s especially important before your period. Simple sugars may increase inflammation, making cramps feel worse. Eating regular meals and snacks with fiber and protein will help keep your blood sugar stable, which is a lot better for those raw nerves than blood-sugar swings.

Consider supplements. Calcium may reduce symptoms of PMS, so shoot for at least 1,200 mg a day. Magnesium is also helpful, as are B complex vitamins. To reduce the inflammation of cramps and breast tenderness, try a primrose-oil supplement; it’s a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory that may work in ways similar to ibuprofen
