DirigoHealth Program Accepting New Enrollees

Starting this month, the state's DirigoHealth program will once again be accepting new enrollees.

The state will receive $17 million dollars as a result of the health care reform law passed earlier this year. The funding is intended to provide coverage for people with pre-existing conditions who were either denied coverage or couldn't afford the insurance premiums.

State law already prevents insurers from denying coverage to Mainers for pre-existing conditions, but until the federal funding became available DirigoHealth had been unable to afford the added cost of coverage for those people.
